The concept of face recognition has long been the subject of much interest. The research area on biometric systems, particularly, has recently risen in popularity. Although face recognition is not necessarily suitable for all applications, it does have some key advantages compared to other biometrics.

Research on automatic face recognition based on facial images has received much attention in recent years based on the increased publications on this topic in many journals and conference papers. Although there are many studies on face recognition, the performance of the methods used to recognize faces (age and gender estimation especially) is still significantly lacking. Various problems are often associated with facial feature extraction and facial feature

classification that researchers consider very challenging to solve. This book proposes a review of face recognition systems to address these issues.

This book reflects progress made over the past 4 decades in the field of automatic face recognition techniques. We have tried to organize, classify and systematically present the problems and challenges of existing approaches to face recognition. We hope this book will be of use to researchers interested in contributing to this area, as well as system integrators and experts in various fields of application who want to explore not only the general concepts but also the intricate details of this fascinating technique.
